Why Virtual IT?

We are proudly different in that we are passionate about our client’s achieving success. We solve IT issues, quickly, professionally, and efficiently. We invest in our staff and have built a culture that encourages and rewards excellent service. Many of our staff have been with us for well over a decade and now lead some of our largest departments, many have even been with the organisation since its inception, and this is also true of our customers with our average customer tenure exceeding 15 years.

We are not your typical IT company that has been acquired (several times maybe), neither do we have a revolving door with staff that regularly move on seeking opportunities elsewhere and we do not offshore our helpdesk services to areas where labour costs are lower.

So, what is different? It is our passion to help our clients succeed and by extension, we succeed. Working in partnership with us, as a team and with our client’s best interest at heart, genuinely delivers exceptional results and enables growth and prosperity for all.

Our company

Founded in 2001, Virtual IT was created to provide a best-in-class corporate IT infrastructure and service solutions to SMEs, and since then we have grown to a team of nearly 100 employees. Headquartered in North West London and with offices across the south-east, we are among the leading Managed Services Providers in the South of England, supporting over 700 organisations and tens of thousands of users with their IT and cyber security needs. 

Our experienced and structured teams deliver a comprehensive range of IT services including, cutting-edge Cyber Security, Helpdesk & On-Site IT Support, Cloud and Modern Workplace solutions, and Communications solutions. These solutions are always carefully tailored to our clients, enabling them to get the best from their IT, with solutions that can scale harmoniously with their business.

Meet our founder

David Somen

With passion for great service and experience in the IT and Communications sectors, David founded Virtual IT in 2001 to better serve the needs of businesses across London and the wider-South East with a broad range of technology solutions. In recent years, that same passion and excitement has been expanded to the education sector, which now constitutes around half of the business’s focus.

Supported by a fantastic team of people, many of whom have been with the business for 15 – 20 years, David’s goal is to continue growing the company while offering customers a broad range of solutions and outstanding service and support.

David has a Law Degree from Oxford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. David has founded three other technology businesses in telecom, internet and IT.

We are passionate about empowering our people to reach their potential and we are always developing ourselves to deliver excellence for our clients. In 2014 we became an Investor In People business, achieving gold certification in 2020, held until 2023.

Our award-winning apprenticeship programme offers school leavers training and development alongside long-term career opportunities within the business. Many of our middle managers started their careers with us during college or university and have been with us for over 10 years. Our helpdesk staff have an average of 4 years of service, compared to an industry average of 12 months. We’re proud of the difference that our investment and commitment to people has made over the years and look forward to investing more into our people and relationships.

Toby joined Virtual IT in 2006 as the then only Team Leader having swiftly fallen out of love of the restrictive nature of corporate life. He gave David a verbal commitment to stay for a couple of years and establish a sustainable and scalable support desk that was flexible enough to react to the ever evolving needs of the customer base, while delivering consistently high levels of customer service.

Things didn’t go to plan. While the support structure was established in short order, he never left.  

Now Chief Operating Officer, Toby’s primary focus is systems, processes and people. This encompasses six frontline helpdesks, three second line teams, 3rd Line, Field Services and Project Management.  

In his spare time Toby enjoys the catharsis of gaming and cooking.  

Simon, our Chief Technology Officer, is an infrastructure specialist and strategic systems analyst who has helped spearhead our technical solution since the company’s inception.

Simon started his career with several years in the ISP and hosting industries (including NTT/Verio, where he developed their Europe wide hosted backup platform), followed by managed IT services, where he has spent over 20 years. Simon is an infrastructure specialist with experience in hosting, cloud services, on prem systems as well as telephony and multi site active directory and VPN solutions. Simon designed and developed Virtual IT’s core managed B2B offering.

Simon was also an early adopter of the idea of hosting VoiP systems using Avaya systems over VPN.

Following the recent pandemic, Paul Davis assumed the role of Sales Director after spending more than 2 decades working with the team at Virtual IT. With a career of over 30 years in the IT industry, Paul possesses a strong passion for Technology and Cyber Security. He believes in utilizing these tools to enhance efficiency, protect client relationships and reputation, reduce costs, and attract new customers. 

Providing peace of mind to his clients is a significant driving force for Paul. He understands that in today’s interconnected world, businesses, assets, and reputations are constantly at risk. To combat this, Paul and his team at Virtual IT take a proactive, security-first approach to managed IT services. They integrate robust cyber security measures into their clients’ IT infrastructure and provide fast and efficient support. This ensures that businesses are shielded from potential threats and vulnerabilities, allowing them to have peace of mind knowing that what matters most is both supported and proactively protected. 

Paul’s exceptional interpersonal skills have allowed him to build strong and mutually beneficial long-term relationships with his clients. He goes above and beyond to understand their specific needs, enabling him to recommend comprehensive and effective cybersecurity strategies tailored to their requirements. 

Paul’s dedication to his young family, as well as his love for motorsport and cyber secure managed services, serve as the foundation for his drive and determination. These passions have shaped his professional journey and have given him a deep understanding of the importance of safeguarding both personal and business assets. 

Tom started his career working for a high profile politician in the Houses of Parliament, a time that helped shape and hone his communication and interpersonal skills as well as enhancing his famed diplomatic approach. He then left to work in telecoms including a stint in Kenya before becoming one of the founding members of the Virtual IT team.

Since then Tom has undertaken a number of different roles  within Customer Service and Operations and has played a key role in the growth and development of the company.

As Virtual IT continued to grow significantly, Tom and the Senior Management Team identified that relationships and building strong partnerships with our customers would be the cornerstone of success. Out of this was born the Customer Account Management Team which was created and headed by Tom.

Tom looks after some of our largest customers as well as leading the B2B and Education Account Management teams. They share Tom’s philosophy and core values around how we interact with our customers to build long lasting and mutually beneficial relationships. Tom and his team have been central to working with our customers to ensure their IT function delivers for their wider business needs.

For his sins, Tom is an expert on Microsoft licensing (a sure fire conversation killer) as well as having a deep knowledge of all aspects of IT infrastructure and security within the SME space. He works closely with our trusted partners to ensure we deliver the right solutions at the right price to our customers.

When he is not looking after his customers and his team, Tom fills his time with his young twin boys and slightly unruly dog in the Wiltshire countryside.

Toni leads the operational and corporate finance function at Virtual IT. 

A New Zealander by birth and heart, Toni decided to leave the great weather and move to the UK, more years ago than is polite to mention. 

She has over 25 years of experience in leading finance teams for start-ups, multinational groups and PLC’s.   Her experience includes financial strategy, mergers and acquisitions across a variety of industries, both local and international. 

Toni’s key focus is building robust internal controls, process efficiencies and service focused finance teams – though she has learnt not to open with this at parties.
